08/04/2010 - Pirate City World Series 2010 - Session 1 Longoria showed as a two-way player at 3B plus on the mound for the first time. Fastball showed a range of 72-77 mph with slight tailing action. Breaking ball showed a 11/5 downward shape with tight spin and sharp break. He attacks hitters, throwing strikes with all his pitches. Defensive grades have improved as 3B as he showed solid footwork and a soft glove action that is presented out front. Offensively, Jalen worked to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields.

05/16/2010 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX At 3B, Jalen showed the ability to play down and out through the baseball when he sets his feet on time. He has average hands and footwork, but displayed a slightly above average arm across the diamond. Would like to see him stay on top of his throws to first base. He is very comfortable in turning the double play from 3B. Offensively, he showed some pop to the pull side on occasion. He loads direct and when he is on time with his hitting position he showed better barrel accuracy. He has a lot of pre-pitch movement which can throw off his timing. When he learns to stay tall and not collapse his backside leg, his barrel accuracy will improve on all pitches. Would like to see him utilize his lower half more efficiently in order to add more power to his swing. He has some pop when he puts it all together.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
