Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2024 - Baseball Factory East Coast Winter Classic (MS) James continues to impress with his well-rounded skills behind the plate, on the mound, and at the plate. As a catcher, he presents a soft, sure mitt and demonstrates strong pocket awareness by consistently sticking pitches. His blocking technique is solid, centering balls out front, and his pop times, currently around 2.98 seconds, will likely drop as he builds arm strength through a long toss program. Offensively, James utilizes a squared setup, with loose hands working through an aggressive swing path, staying inside the ball and spraying line drives to all fields while generating power through an aggressive hip turn. On the mound, his fastball sits between 59-60 mph, paired with a breaking ball that shows a 10/4 shape and gradual break. He does tend to slow his arm speed on the changeup, which can tip off hitters, but this should improve as he gains experience and arm strength. Highly coachable with a strong work ethic, James is poised to continue elevating his game as he develops further.

07/14/2024 - Baseball Factory Texas All Star Experience James continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities on the diamond. Behind the dish, he shows a squared setup and firm glove, sticking pitches in the zone. He needs to utilize his body more through the blocking process to deadening ball out front. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.88 with accuracy on his throws. As he builds arm strength through a long toss program, we can expect those pop times to drop. At the plate, hitting / power potential has improved. He shows a squared setup and loose hands help him generate an aggressive swing path, leading to consistent contact. His line drive approach reflects his ability to hit the ball effectively, particularly to the pull side. Lower half works well through the swing with an aggressive hip turn. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

02/24/2024 - National Showcase - Palmyra (Harrisburg), PA James is a tall, lean catcher who will graduate in 2030. Behind the dish, feet are active as he shows good direction, working in line his target. Pop times showed in 3.03 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. He tracks the ball well and presents a firm mitt in sticking pitches. Working to get body down sooner to be on time will aid in improving blocking skills. At the plate, he continues to shine, displaying solid power potential through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Lower half works well through the swing as he transfers weight into a firm front side. With 6 years to further develop, James has potential with time and room to continue to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
