Durant still projects as a class 4 catcher, and showed solid defensive skills behind the plate in Arizona. He holds a low target fields in a square position, and pop times remain in the low 2's. James blocks the baseball well, shows a clean exchange, and a quick arm action when throwing to his target. Offensively, James is a lead-off type hitter with an open stance, firm front side, and good balance. He flashes some bat speed and can drive the ball from gap to gap.

James continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a tremendous future on the diamond. Behind the plate, feet are aggressive and active as he works in line to his target, through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.01 with accuracy / carry on his throws. He will control the running game with his feet / arm. Receiving / blocking skills show as outstanding tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, he shows an open / athletic setup. Hands are quick (85 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and is a hard worker who plays with a lot of energy.
04/09/2017 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA
James continues to progress in his game. Throws down to 2B are on the bag as his pop times have dropped to 2.04. He works quickly around pitches in the dirt, and works to center/deaden the ball off of his chest. In the OF, he tracks down fly-balls with speed. Transfer is smooth as he maintains athletic actions and works through the ball aggressively. As a hitter, James displays an athletic setup with centered balance. He whips the barrel on a level path, squares the ball up and drives it on a line back up the middle of the field. A 2-way talent, James has the tools that will make an impact in a variety of ways on the diamond.

James is a hardworking C/OF prospect who has skill on both sides of the ball and graduates in 2018. Behind the plate, James plays with quick footwork and agile body actions moving swiftly in each direction laterally. He has an athletic setup and presents a low target as he receives the ball with a firm glove. James has a clean exchange leading into a loose, quick arm action throwing from an over the top slot. He has a quick release and stays inline producing strong, accurate throws down to 2B. Offensively, James has a square stance with a firm front side and centered balance. He has an on-time stride and uses his lower half throughout his swing. James flashes fast bat speed through an on-plane swing path as he gets good extension at contact. His barrel stays flat producing consistent contact. James has a line drive approach and can spray the ball to all fields. In the outfield, James takes effective angles to cover good ground and maintains agile body control. He presents his glove and fields the ball in a low, athletic position. He has a clean exchange leading into a loose, long arm action. James plays with momentum through his release producing consistently strong throws. Overall, James has a solid approach and good upside in multiple areas of the game.

James is a well-rounded catching prospect who has an athletic build and graduates in 2018. As a right-handed hitter, James has a square setup with a centered balance. He has a smooth load with a square stride as he uses his lower half throughout his swing. He has an on-plane swing path producing consistent contact. James has the ability to spray the ball to all fields. Behind the plate, James has an athletic setup and presents a low target. He moves well laterally with quick footwork and controls his body well. James tracks the ball well and receives it with a firm glove. He has a quick exchange leading into a short arm action throwing from an over-the-top slot. James plays with momentum through his release producing accurate throws down to 2B. Overall, James has skill on both sides of the ball and the ability to impact a program at the next level.
11/13/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Riverside, CA
James continues to improve in all areas of his game, while making particularly impressive strides in his blocking ability. He displays quick feet behind the dish with a low setup that allows him to get down quickly to block and keep balls in the dirt in front of him. He works inline to the pitcher, keeping strikes in the zone and working around pitches on the edges. He is quick to his feet and has a fast exchange and release to throw down to second. At the plate, he shows a square stance with rhythm in the box to load to a stacked position. His lower half works well to generate bat speed and pop and his path is level and direct to make consistent, line drive contact. Working on his front foot timing to launch sooner will lead to a solid base to swing from, producing more power. James is a skilled player we look forward to continue following as he progresses.

James continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved, now an outstanding runner as indicated by his 60 time of 6.90. Pop times showed in the low 2.10 range with accuracy on his throws. Receiving / blocking skills continue to show as quality tools. He tracks balls well, displaying a soft glove and is quick to recover through the blocking process. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work to and through an aggressive approach, creating extension. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap to gap pop.
08/03/2016 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1
James is an exciting catching prospect who will graduate in 2018. Behind the dish, his receiving/blocking skills both play very well, keeping a loose wrist to frame pitches and does a fine job of creating good angles to block balls in the dirt. His best asset however may be his arm, with a 2.19 low pop time, he shows the ability to receive and get the ball out quickly with a clean exchange. Long tossing will aid his arm strength and help make his pop time even lower. Offensively, he drives the ball to all fields, setting up athletically, to take a quick/square stride to the pitcher. Natural growth and a workout regime centered around overall strength will help with power to all fields. James is an exciting prospect who will catch the eyes of college coaches over his next few years in high school.

With 2 years to further develop, James has potential with time and room to progress his game.
