08/03/2017 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training & Tournament at Historic Dodgertown (Ages 14-18) James continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.27. Feet are active working in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and works to get rid of the baseball quicker. Glove action is soft as he sticks balls well in the zone. He uses his body well through the blocking process and is a wall behind the plate. He is vocal and shows great leadership traits behind the dish. At the plate, he shows a tall setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

02/20/2017 - College PREP - Brentwood (Long Island), NY James is a lean catcher who will graduate in 2019. Behind the plate, feet are active as he gains ground and works through a clean / transfer exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times showed in the 2.30 range with accuracy to his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Hands are soft as he lets the ball travel and tracks well, sticking in the zone. He uses his body well through the blocking process but needs to work on his lateral movements to improve abilities. At the plate, he shows a squared / balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. Power will continue to improve as he utilize his lower half more aggressively. With 2 years to further develop, James has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
