Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

04/14/2013 - College PREP - Plano (DFW), TX James continues to show solid abilities in his game. Defensively as SS, he moves well around the ground ball and plays through to his target well. On the mound, James shows consistency in his 3-pitch arsenal. He pounds the zone and throws strikes with all of his pitches. As a hitter, this right-handed hitter has quick hands and plus barrel accuracy, consistently squaring the ball up. He gets good extension through the ball and hits line-drives. James shows an overall solid skill set and still has a year to fine tune his game.

04/15/2012 - National Tryout - North Richland Hills (DFW), TX James worked out both in the INF and on the mound during his last workout in TX. Defensively, James showed firm hands, quick feet, and good lateral range. He picks out the right hops, fields in a low / athletic position, and delivers the ball with accuracy from a short / loose arm action. On the mound, James has a sound / quick arm, level shoulders, and good direction toward home. He mixes his pitches well, and his FB shows some sneaky life. At the plate, James has a square / athletic set-up, a short stride, and fast bat speed. He makes square contact, he has a line drive approach, and he gets his lower 1/2 through.

12/27/2011 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament - Session 2 James worked out at SS and threw a little on the mound during his time in Pirate City. Defensively, James has a solid / athletic set-up, he is aggressive to the ball, and his hands work well. He fields the ball cleanly, makes plays, and he throws with good accuracy across the diamond. On the mound, James pitches to contact, he has good direction, and average arm strength. He competes in the zone and gets outs. At the plate, James has good balance, decent bat speed, and his swing is aggressive. He has quick hands, good barrel accuracy, and he shows good strike zone awareness.

07/10/2011 - Select Training at the All-Star Game James is a MIF that will graduate in 2014. Foot speed is solid average as indicated by his 7.35 60 time. He will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active as he moves well laterally, displaying range. He needs to be more aggressive in coming to get while playing through ground balls with his body. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turns of the double play and slow rollers. Throws are accurate but must get on a long toss program to aid in building more arm strength with carry. Offensively, Heckart shows a balanced approach and loads well. Hands are quick, flashing bat but gets long with barrel getting out around the ball. He needs to work on working to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. With 3 years to further develop, James has time and room to continue to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
