05/18/2014 - College PREP - Bel Air (Baltimore), MD James continues to show improvements in baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.43 runner. Defensive grade have really improved, now showing outstanding abilities as he displays smooth, athletic actions. Feet are active / aggressive as he moves well laterally, displaying range in the MIF. Hands / feet work well through the fielding process and shows big play potential. At the plate, power grade has improved, now showing solid average through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields.

03/09/2014 - National Tryout - Hightstown, NJ James continues to work hard on his game. With the stick, this righty displays good rhythm and attacks with aggressiveness. He squares the ball up and drives it on a line. In the OF, he hustles into position and catches the ball at its highest point. He has a clean exchange and works in-line toward the dish. At SS, he moves fluidly to the ground ball and plays through from right to left. He has clean actions and a quick transfer/exchange. A hard worker - James will find success on the diamond.

08/05/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 James continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Feet are quick and he works to square balls up showing clean hands. He attacks balls and plays through while presenting hands out front and has improved defensive grade. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting grades have improved through a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are loose, quick and work through a level swing path. He tracks the ball well and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to improve, he needs to level out swing path and stay inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a good attitude, works hard and is very coachable.

07/22/2012 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 4 James showed a solid approach at SS, soft hands, and he works around the ball well. He moves well laterally, makes the plays, and he throws with accuracy to his target. At the plate, James has an athletic stance, a simple swing, and he makes consistent contact. He has a level swing path, a tall backside, and he can hit hard to the pull side.

12/27/2011 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament - Session 2 James worked out at SS and on the mound during his time in Pirate City.  Defensively, James showed good pre-pitch actions, he is aggressive to the ball, and he moves well laterally.  He keeps the ball in front of his body and throws with accuracy across the diamond.  On the mound, James works in quick tempo, he pounds the zone with strikes, and he shows good mound composure.  At the plate, James has a solid set-up, an aggressive approach, and good strike zone discipline.  He puts the bat on the ball and hustles down the line.

09/24/2011 - Accelerated Pitching/Catching Weekend (Commuter) James has very good arm action throughout his delivery. He needs to work on loading his backside in his balance and finishing lower. This will allow him to use his body more efficiently, creating leverage and a better weight transfer with his arm.

09/17/2011 - Accelerated Hitting Weekend (Commuter) James shows a good solid base in his swing with potential to grow and get stronger. James shows many positives at all points of his swing, but does have a tendency to let his hands release from his body which allows his barrel to drag. But improving this will open many opportunities for him as a hitter.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
