Official Scouting Report

11/01/2020 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Indianapolis, IN James is an athletic OF/RHP who will graduate in 2024. In the OF, he displays smooth / fluid actions. He takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. Feet are active as he works to get behind balls but needs to play through with momentum to his target. He moves well laterally with range improving as he increases foot quickness. At the plate, he show a squared, athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 68-69 mph. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard resembling fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 4 years to further develop, James has potential with time and room to improve his game.

02/29/2020 - Baseball Factory Mid-Atlantic Pitching/Catching Training - Columbia, MD (Ages 12-14) James is a hard worker who continues to make great strides. On the mound, this RHP throws a FB & CH from an over-the-top arm slot with a loose/free arm action. He works to a controlled balance point, has smooth separation, and gets god glove-side lead. He drives downhill and pushes off of the rubber well. FB now tops out at 68 mph with some tailing action. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed while displaying some cut. Continuing to throw and develop his CH more will help him to become more confident with throwing it for strikes. James is a 2024 grad who has skills with upside on the mound.

09/15/2019 - Interactive Video Program - Indianapolis, IN James showed several improvements in his game during his last workout with The Factory. He raised arm velocity to 65 MPH, exit velocity to 68 MPH, and ran his best 60 to date at 8.65 seconds. At 3rd base, James has some pre-pitch actions, efficient footwork, and he takes good angles to the ball. He makes plays, his exchange is clean, and he throws with accuracy and consistency across the diamond. On the mound, James has good balance over the rubber, he keeps a still head, and works in good tempo. He gets solid extension on his pitches and works well out of the stretch. At the plate, James has an open/athletic stance, a short/square stride, and good balance. He swings on plane and hits line drives. Overall skills can get better with work on the following.

Infield
1. Release
2. Range
Pitching
1. Lengthen AA
2. Avoid falling off
3. Landing
Offense
1. Shorten swing
2. Rhythm
3. Barrel accuracy

12/08/2018 - Mid-Atlantic Regional Hitting Weekend (Ages 12-14) James is an intelligent and hardworking 2024 prospect that made several adjustments throughout the Mid Atlantic Hitting Weekend. At the plate, James starts in a crouched stance, loads his hands back into the drive position, and gets his front foot down on time. He attacks the inside part of the ball and creates backside rotation with his lower half. He needs to continue to keep his head down at contact and stay balanced through contact. James will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

11/03/2018 - Mid-Atlantic Regional Pitching and Catching Weekend (Ages 12-14) James is an athletic and talented pitching prospect that made several adjustments throughout the Mid Atlantic Regional Pitching and Catching Weekend. On the bump, James throws from a three-quarter arm slot, and shows the ability to cut his fastball. He needs to continue to work on balancing over the rubber, separating on time, and having a controlled landing. This will help him work over the front side and work downhill. Riding the back leg toward the catcher and extending through his release point will allow him to work down in the strike zone. James will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
