Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/3BPosition Projection

04/21/2013 - College PREP - Plymouth Meeting (Philadelphia), PA Melone continues to show as a corner IF, projecting slightly better defensively at 1B. He displays proper footwork and clean fielding actions. Hands are soft / clean and sure as he makes the plays. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Jared shows an athletic setup with balance. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side but can work on staying level and short with his swing. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered.

10/24/2012 - Arizona Freshman/Sophmore Fall Classic In Jared's latest Factory event he showed improvements in almost all aspects of his game from his previous events. Defensively at first, he has good bag awareness, applies quality tags, and has quality throwing footwork. In the outfield, he takes good angles in the gaps, and has decent range. Increasing his jumps, and eliminating drifting to balls will help his defensive play in the outfield. Offensively, he has good barrel accuracy, good extension, and good bat speed. Eliminating his arm bar, squaring his back foot and being on-time will help increase his lower half usage and bat speed, allowing for greater power. Overall, the coaching staff felt as though Jared projects well as a first basemen and even said he was a "Coach's Dream" with a great attitude and intangibles.

12/27/2011 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament - Session 2 Jared is a tall and athletic 2B that will graduate in 2015. He showed us some improvements since his initial workout in the summer. Defensively, his feet are active as he displays proper footwork around the bag and on his feeds / turns of the double play. He keeps the ball in front and shows accuracy on his throws. He makes the routine plays but can further improve his tool grades defensively by working on his lateral movement, being more aggressive in attacking, playing through ground balls, and presenting his hands more out front. At the plate, Melone continues to be an above average hitter for his age. He shows a balanced setup with rhythm. His hands are quick, working inside the ball through a level swing path as he uses all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. With 3 years to further develop, Jared has a ton of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
