02/22/2013 - Yankees Spring Training Experience (Ages 14-18) Heinz continues to improve on his game. He has a strong baseball IQ and uses it on the field. Defensively at the hot corner, he works from the ground up and presents his glove out in front. He gets a low base and is sure handed, making the plays. He has a clean exchange and uses his lower 1/2 when working toward his target, making accurate throws across the diamond. On the mound, FB velo increased, now topping out at 72 mph. Jeffrey gets to a tall and controlled balance point and works in-line toward the plate. He pounds the zone and throws strikes with all of his pitches. Finishing out over his front side and continued long toss will help to increase arm strength and raise velocities. As a hitter, he shows a strong bat angle and gets his backside lower 1/2 through at contact. He keeps his head down and squares up the ball, making solid contact. As a 2014 graduate, this 2-way player still has time to improve on his game.

01/18/2013 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Heinz continued to show as a 3B/RHP at the event. At 3B, feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square balls up. Hands are clean but needs to present more out front, improve foot speed, and play through a low approach to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Jeffrey shows a balanced, open setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and work through a level swing path and he makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers continue to improve as he learns to use lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 68-69 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains are speed on his changeup, showing sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable.

12/16/2012 - College PREP - Lewiston, ME Jeffrey is a two-way player that plays 3B and pitches. Defensively at 3B, he has soft/sure hands, active footwork, and he makes plays. He needs to play lower in his fielding position and release the ball sooner - eliminating glove tapping. Offensively, he has a square setup with a load and patience attacking the zone. Jeffrey has a nice up-the-middle approach with some bat speed and consistency with contact. Working on his rhythm and extension through contact will benefit his hit ability. On the mound, he throws three pitches for strikes, topping out at 69 MPH with his fastball. His curve-ball has 11/5 shape and his change-up has sink. He stays in line to the dish and has smooth rhythm and a complete finish. Jeffrey needs to use more of his lower half within his mechanics to help add velocity. Currently, we believe Jeffrey projects best in the infield at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
