08/05/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 O'Lear continues to show as a RHP/2B with steady play in his baseball abilities. Feet are active as he squares up ground balls and present soft / clean hands. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to attack ground balls, play through while presenting hands more out front and improve foot quickness. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact and shows a good recognition of the strike zone. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and improve bat speed. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 4 for 9 with a 2B. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 76-77 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a hard worker and is very coachable.

03/09/2013 - College PREP - Kenosha, WI Jimmy is an average sized RHP / 2nd baseman who will graduate in 2015. On the hill, Jimmy has a sound / easy arm action, on-time separation, and a controlled balance point. He has level shoulders, lands in a complete position, and competes in the zone. Mound effectiveness can improve if Jimmy can keep a still head, improve his glove side lead, and add arm strength. At 2B, Jimmy has firm hands, a low approach, and he delivers the ball with consistency from a long arm action. More pre-pitch actions and playing through the ball more will help defense get better. At the plate, Jimmy has an athletic set-up, good balance, and a level swing. He tracks the ball well, has good feel for the barrel, and flashes some pop in his bat. More lower 1/2 and not diving to the ball will help hitting numbers improve.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
