Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

09/26/2010 - College PREP - McKees Rocks, PA John showed some improvements in his game during his workout in Pittsburgh. He is a young, 2-way player that currently projects best at 1st base. Defensively, John has a decent approach, average glove, and he works to field the ball cleanly. John makes plays and throws with good accuracy to his target. John will need to lighten his feet, get his glove down sooner, and avoid throwing against his body in order to get better defensively. On the mound, John has a live / quick arm and he competes in the zone. He locates his FB well, has good direction toward the plate, and he keeps consistent velocity even from the stretch. John can improve his mound presence if he can improve his extension, and keep his eyes to his target better. Offensively, John has good balance and a short / strong swing. He finds the barrel of the bat, his lower 1/2 works well, and he has some pop in his bat. Solid offensive numbers can improve with better extension, and by working the ball to all fields.

06/17/2010 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 1 John showed improvements in his game during his time in Omaha. He is an aggressive Pitcher, who pounds the zone, and pitches to contact. John increased his radar velocity from 75 to 79 MPH at the event, and has 2 solid off-speed pitches to compliment it well. John gathers himself over the rubber well, and has good direction toward the plate. If John can loosen his front leg, get more extension, and work both sides of the plate, abilities on the mound can get better. In the INF, John makes plays on balls hit his way and has good footwork around the bag. He can pick the ball out of the dirt well, and throws accurately to his target. Offensively, John lets the ball travel deep and can square it up on the barrel. He has some bat speed, and he puts the ball in play. Hitting can get better with a more compact swing, and by not dropping his back side.

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 John is a stocky, young, 2-way player that plays 1B and LHP. On the mound, John has good mound presence and a loose arm from a 3/4 angle. His wind-up is consistent and he gets to his balance point well. John works quickly on the mound and showed good command of his off speed pitches. John's abilities on the mound can improve by working on a downhill plane, finishing off his pitches, and working to get ahead of the hitters. At 1B, John has an easy, accurate throwing arm and good baseball instincts. His feet and hands play well for his current age, but he will need to work with a speed / agility drills as he grows and matures. At the plate, John has strength and is a line drive hitter. He has some bat speed and pop into the gaps, but will need to improve his rhythm and load as he further grows and matures.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
