10/10/2010 - College PREP - Bristol, VA John is young (2014) two-way player at 2B plus on the mound with a thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature, filling out. Currently, he projects best at 2B for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive on his approach through the baseball with his body. He utilizes two hands well displaying soft, clean, and sure glove action. Lateral movement is a plus as he shows a plus backhand. Throws show accuracy as he will benefit by getting on a long toss program to further develop more arm strength and carry. Offensively, Long tracks the ball well through a balanced approach. He loads well with hands working directly to the baseball through a level swing path. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 66-70 mph with sinking action. Breaking displays 10/4 shape with tight spin and gradual break. Changeup shows feel for with arm side run. Off speed pitches need further development to be quality pitches at the next level. He throws strikes with all his pitches, attacking hitters. With 4 years to further develop, John has a lot of potential with the makings of a solid collegiate player as he continues to improve.
