Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

06/09/2010 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2010 Stone continues to show steady play in his baseball abilities, showing as a two-way player. We feel that he currently projects best on the mound for the next level but he does have pop in his bat. Fastball showed a range of 79-84 mph, an improvement on what we saw earlier this year. Breaking ball displays downward shape with tight spin. He attacks hitters, throwing a lot of strikes. Stone showed good baseball instincts and is a competitor on the mound. Offensively, he continued to show a good balanced set up, as well as gap power with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered.

03/07/2010 - College PREP - Greenville, SC John is a two-way player on the mound plus at 3B with a tall frame that shows projection as he continues to mature. Arm strength is a plus with his throws displaying life, carry and accuracy across the diamond through a loose and quick arm action. Defensively, his arm is definitely playable, and his feet are active, but he needs to be more aggressive in coming to get and playing through ground balls. On the mound, his delivery is sound displaying solid mechanics through a slow tempo. Fastball shows a range of 81-83 mph on a downhill plane with late life. Off speed pitches flash potential of being quality pitches at the next level. Offensively, Stone shows a balanced approach, flashing bat speed with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered as he creates backspin. He has above average power, which currently is best shown to the pull side. John is a good player now, but has potential to improve. He will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to develop, and he could possibly be a two-way player at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
