Official Scouting Report

  • OF/2BPosition Projection

10/05/2014 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ John showed improvement in his most recent Baseball Factory outing by flashing a 4.69 to 1B and topping out at 71 mph. He continued to show his ability to track down balls while keeping his body under control. Getting behind the ball and playing through it with a strong arm will improve his abilities as an outfielder. At 2B, he works from right to left in an athletic position fielding the ball out front. With his controlled approach he is able to give accurate throws and DP feeds. Working on his glove hand and adjusting his arm action to resemble a middle infielder will take his 2B abilities to the next level. At the plate, his lower 1/2 was engaged and used to drive the ball to the pull side. He maintains a fluid, level swing path generating lots of line drives. Making sure his hands are launched directly towards the ball and using all fields will make him a bigger threat in the lineup. This young player has shown a lot of improvement and should have a great varsity season.

07/12/2013 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 John only showed in the OF at the event and has improved his baseball abilities. Defensive grade has improved as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and works to get behind playing through well with momentum to his target. He reads balls well off the bat and has good instincts as he covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting and power grades have improved as well through a crouched / athletic setup. He tracks the ball well and has a solid recognition of the strike zone. Swing path is level with power numbers continuing to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Mental makeup is a plus as he plays the game hard and is very coachable.

01/13/2012 - Tampa Spring Training John is an athletic/strong kid who plays OF/RHP and will graduate in 2016. His arm strength is above average and he is accurate to his target but he can use his lower half more to generate power. In the outfield, he has clean hands, active/efficient footwork, and an athletic fielding position. John made multiple exceptional plays in game situations in Tampa as he hustles on and off the field. John needs to keep working on his agility/speed and basic fundamentals. Specifically he can get a lot more out of his lower half when throwing and he needs to raise his arm angle so his ball will carry more. On the mound, John showed some potential as he did a very nice job in game situations. Mechanically, his balance point, separation, direction and tempo are all solid but he needs to work on his arm action (lengthen/get more extension) and his finish. At the plate, John is an adjustment or two away from being a standout hitter. He has an athletic setup, centered stride, smooth load, and his lower half gets through. He has a good line drive approach with a smooth swing path that is on-plane, smooth rhythm and he uses the entire field. John begins with his weight too far back and then transfers it forward until he is too far front. He needs to be able to hold his balance (centered) in order to be give him the best chance for success in the future. He is also a very heads-up player, great base-runner, and he is respectful and coachable. John is on the brink of breaking through as an exceptional player and he has a big upside. If he makes a couple small adjustments to his game he can be a standout player.

08/19/2011 - Interactive Video Program - Poughkeepsie, NY John is a young OF with a thin frame. In the OF, John has a glove that works, he has playable feet, and he stays behind the ball well. He keeps his eyes to the ball, he plays through some, and his throws are online to his target. Offensively, John has a square / athletic set-up, a proper load, and a short stride. He has good balance, average bat speed, and he makes hard contact. John swings in good rhythm and he gets his lower 1/2 through. John can improve his baseball abilities with work on the following.

Defense
1. Lighten feet
2. Quicken exchange
3. Long toss
Offense
1. Shorten swing
2. Bat speed
3. Let ball travel

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
