Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/2BPosition Projection

08/11/2010 - Pirate City World Series 2010 - Session 2 Maloney showed similar abilities that we had previously seen in Baltimore, MD. He did show on the mound for the first time with fastball showing a range of 68-74 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displayed 10/4 shape with early break. In the IF, feet are aggressive with hands and feet working well through the fielding process. Offensively, Johnny shows a short, direct path as he works to keep hands inside the ball. He shows discipline at the plate and works the count. Mental makeup is a plus as he is willing to do anything to help the team. He shows a passion for the game with a great attitude.

05/16/2010 - College PREP - Baltimore, MD John is a thin, athletic infielder that is currently better suited for 3B over 2B. At the hot corner, John presents his glove well, has good footwork, and good hands. He moves well laterally, makes plays on balls hit his way, and has a good idea. John can throw from different arm slots, and has life and carry across the diamond. John has good athleticism at 3B, and if he can work in a lower position, and widen his base when fielding, defensive skills can further improve. At 2B, John looks the ball into his glove and shows good lateral movements. He again shows athleticism fielding the ball but needs to approach the ball more aggressively and use 2 hands when turning the double play. At the plate, John has pretty good balance and barrel accuracy. He has decent bat speed, can work the ball to all fields, and makes okay use of his lower 1/2. Hitting can get better if John can avoid lunging at the ball, keep his hands high, and shorten up his swing with better extension.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
