Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/SSPosition Projection

02/22/2013 - Yankees Spring Training Experience (Ages 14-18) Joe continues to show as a 2-way player; in the INF as well as on the mound. Defensively at SS, he presents his glove, shows decent pre-pitch movements, and works to get into a square fielding position. He works his glove from the ground up, which help to avoid getting bad hops. Continuing to add arm strength will help this SS progress his game. On the mound, he has a repeatable delivery and pounds the zone, throwing strikes with all of his pitches. Earlier separation and more extension out over his front side should help to improve his effectiveness on the mound. As a hitter, Tristan shows good rhythm, getting himself into a solid loaded position, keeping his weight back. His upper and lower 1/2 work well together as he remains balanced throughout his swing, squaring up the ball consistently. Creating extension through the ball at contact will help to increase his power. Jose will continue to improve in his game through hard work.

12/02/2012 - College PREP - McCook (Chicago), IL Jose is a 2014 two-position player with similar ability levels on the mound and in the infield. At shortstop, he has some prep to his actions and makes the routine play. He needs to allow his body to work all the way through the play and field the ball out in front more consistently. Rhythm is a bit choppy at present. Offensively, he delivers the barrel with average bat speed and uses the whole field. His foot gets down late, so he loses his bat plane at times. This causes him to hook some pitches and fade others. On the mound, Jose has a slider, a change, and a split to go with his fastball. Delivery is smooth and he gets good extension. Throws strikes with all pitches but the split. Fastball is fairly straight and the slider has 11/5 shape and a slight, gradual break. Changeup is straight like the fastball. The split has some sink, but he did not throw it for strikes in this workout. Jose still has time to improve overall athleticism and mechanics.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
