Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Joseph participated at the UA Preseason All-America as a RHP, and showed good stuff. He is a thin, athletic pitcher with excellent mound presence. His FB touched 85 MPH, and his mechanics are in-line and on-time. Joe keeps his eyes on his target, has a loose / easy arm action, and he works both sides of the plate well. He mixes his pitches, and with more use of his lower 1/2, Joe can further improve on the hill. Offensively, Joe has good bat speed and has pop in his bat. He centers the ball up well on the barrel, and with a shorter stroke and more balanced stance, hitting can improve.

11/08/2009 - College PREP - Fresno, CA Joseph is a tall, lanky RHP with a bright upside. He has a loose arm, a powerful lower 1/2, and quick hips. His FB touched 84 MPH, and his CB and CH are both very solid pitches. Joseph has good direction to the plate and he utilizes his height to create a downhill plane. If Joseph works to keep his front side closed, and stays on top of the baseball, he could potential pick up velocity. At the plate, Joseph does have some strength and pop, but projects as a Pitcher only at the next level.

07/31/2009 - Pirate City World Series - Session 1 Valentino improved his 60-yard dash by a tenth of a second since we last saw him, down from 7.60 to 7.50. On the mound, his fastball topped at 82 - a one mph jump from what we saw in June 2009. His arm worked pretty well, and he was aggressive with his fastball. His breaking ball had rolling downward action. Would benefit from improved lower body action and direction. Defensive abilities are slightly above average as he utilizes his quick feet well in tracking down balls in the OF taking proper routes and angles. He needs to stay on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry on throws. At the plate, he stood in well and battled in at bats. Can work to start his hands in a more athletic position, will help him stay more square with his shoulders and shorten his stroke. With work to stay more athletic through his swing, he should see an improvement in his bat speed and quality of contact.

06/14/2009 - College PREP - Oakland, CA Joseph is a RHP who brings a better than average high school frame to the diamond. On the mound, Joseph has good leg drive, a loose whipping arm, and decent glove side pull for better throwing arm extension. To become a better P, Valentino needs to become more fluid from balance point to landing, he needs to keeps his front hip closed, and needs to develop a consistent release point. At the plate, Joseph throws his hips for power and keeps his head on the ball most of the time allowing for descent contact. To improve his hitting he needs to develop a load of his hands, avoid dipping on his back side, driving more with his top hand, and exploding through the baseball.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
