01/15/2010 - Vero Beach Spring Training & Competition - 2010 Kurleman did a good job of staying around the zone with his pitches. His fastball topped at 71 mph this outing, and he also showed some feel for his down breaking 53-55 mph curve. He used both pitches to go after hitters, did a good job of pitching to contact. He can work to improve the direction of his delivery, but mainly needs to involve his lower half more to drive down the mound - get chest out over front knee at finish, will help extension and potential for increased fastball velocity. At the plate, he tended to have an uphill swing path that was out and around the ball. Needs to keep his hands up to load, and then needs to work to drive the knob down and inside the ball to contact. Defensively, he worked to get in front of balls well. Can work to soften his hands and arms, and to get his rear end lower in his fielding position. Has room to develop his arm strength, much like on the mound he can work to loosen his wrist and finish his throws better out front. Ran 8.18 in the 60-yard dash, the same as we saw before.
