07/18/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Sauget (St. Louis), IL Justin improved his foot speed at the event, now a well above average runner as indicated by his 60 time of 7.08. At the plate, he improved his hitting abilities through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. In the MIF, he displays quick / athletic actions. Feet are aggressive as he works around and plays through balls with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and he presents well out front. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot ground. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 76-77 mph. Breaking ball displays 3/9 shape with across break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. He throws a slider that is harder but only spins. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

01/13/2017 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Justin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a well above average runner at 7.27. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 79 mph. He displays a sound / repeatable delivery, working in line and on time allowing his arm to work loose / free to the plate. Fastball shows good sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Control is solid as he attacks hitters throwing strikes with all his pitches. He shows good composure and competes on the mound. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He makes consistent contact with power showing best to the pull side. At the event, he was 2 for 5 with a 2B. In the MIF, feet are active as he works around balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft / clean but needs to present more out front. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard on the diamond.

10/23/2016 - College PREP - O'Fallon, MO Justin is a 5'11” 150lb two-way prospect who is currently more advanced as a shortstop. He is a solid defender at short with a good arm and natural baseball instincts. His feet are active and he takes good angles to field, centering the ball in his body to keep it in front. He exchanges to throw quickly and has an accurate arm to his target, also feeding double plays cleanly. On the hill, he displays a three pitch mix, including a mid 70's fastball, a 10-4 curveball that tops out at 66 and a tailing, deceptive changeup. His arm action is smooth with no restrictions and he drives hard with his back leg to jump at the hitter. Keeping his balance throughout the delivery will help improve command as his body with be more in sync. At the plate, he has a middle/oppo approach with the ability to drive the ball to the opposite field. He extends well through contact after launching from a stacked, powerful load to generate some pop. Justin is a prospect we look forward to watching develop in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
