10/24/2010 - College PREP - Atlanta, GA Justin is a young RHP with a tall, thin frame that is well suited for his position and shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Delivery shows a slow tempo and stops coming out of the balance position causing his arm action to be late as he has to restart it. He works much better out of the stretch. Delivery is deceptive and arm action is loose and quick when on time. Fastball shows a range of 75-77 mph with arm side run. Off speed pitches are quality, showing as potential out pitches at the next level. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin and sharp breaking action. Changeup shows a solid feel for with fading action. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches and changes speeds well. Stock on the mound will rise quickly if more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Schurfeld has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
