01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Wakem is a 2014 graduate who is a 2-way player as a C/SS. He showed very well at the Pre-Season All America event in Arizona. From behind the plate, Justin showed off his arm by throwing a 1.94 to second base. His arm action is loose and accurate and his hands firm. He has a low, athletic fielding position and his footwork is fluid. Justin should continue to focus on blocking the ball back to the plate. Offensively, his set up is athletic and balance is centered. His swing is short, and he is a contact hitter who uses the middle of the field well. He should focus his offensive work on his lower half rotation and smoothing out his swing.

10/17/2012 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Wakem continues to show outstanding abilities behind the plate. Arm strength is outstanding with pop times showing in the 1.97-2.00 range as he will control the running game with his feet / arm. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, Justin shows a solid setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 2 for 6 with a 2B. Mental makeup is a plus as he is a student of the game and works hard to be the best player he can be.

07/08/2012 - 2012 Team One West Showcase Justin is an athletic catcher with a strong lower half. Behind the plate, he has quick feet and soft glove, along with easy lateral actions to block. His defensive abilities should continue to develop as he learns to stay low and athletic as he gains ground toward his target. At the plate, he has an athletic setup and strong balance that helps him maintain a swing that can hit the ball to all fields. His offensive tools should continue to improve as he learns to create some separation in his load and maintain a quiet head throughout his swing. As a 2014 graduate, Justin has the opportunity to continue to develop his skills in preparation for the next level.

05/13/2012 - College PREP - Portland, OR Justin is a young, athletic, catcher / SS with solid skills. Behind the plate, Justin has soft / sure hands, quick / active feet, and he tracks the ball well. He has good lateral movements, he blocks well, and his exchange is quick and clean. Justin has a short / quick arm action, and he throws with life and carry to 2nd base. At SS, Justin has active feet, soft hands, and he fields in a low / athletic position. He fields out in front, his exchange is smooth, and he delivers the ball with accuracy and life to across the diamond. Working on the double play and not slinging the ball across the diamond can help spike defensive tool grades. At the plate, Justin has a closed stance, a proper load, and good balance. He has fast bat speed, he makes square contact, and he gets good extension through the ball. Hitting can get better with more separation and better rhythm / timing.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
