Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

06/27/2010 - Team One South 2010 Kelby showed similar abilities at Team One South as he has done in previous workouts. At 3B, Kelby's hands and feet plays well together and he fields the ball cleanly. He makes plays on balls hit his way and he throws accurately across the diamond. Quicker feet and more sure hands will help defensive numbers improve. On the mound, Kelby has has good off-speed pitches, which compliment his FB well. He has good mechanics and is inline and on-time to his target. Kelby changes speeds well, and if he can avoid rushing to the plate and add arm strength, mound effectiveness can further improve. Offensively, Kelby has a balanced approach, good bat speed, and quick hands. He has pull side pop, and the ball jumps of his bat when centered properly. A more level swing will only help offensive numbers continue to get better.

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Kelby showed improvements in his baseball tools with foot speed improving as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.17 runner. He utilizes his quick feet well on his approach with ground balls, making all the plays. Offensively, he shows strength in his swing displaying gap to gap power as he was 2 for 6 with a 2B and 3B at the event. On the mound, fastball's range was 74-80 mph with a means of 79. Off speed pitches are average needing further development. Chowning projects best at 3B for the next level.

08/30/2009 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Chowning continues to show solid and steady play in his baseball abilities. At 3B, hands are soft, clean, and sure in making all the plays. Lateral movement is a plus, displaying range. Hands and feet work well together in getting rid of the baseball quickly on his double play feeds. At the plate, Kelby shows quick hands that work direct to the baseball, generating bat speed. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off when centered. He has the makings to be a solid player at the collegiate level.

07/31/2009 - Pirate City World Series - Session 1 Kelby is a young two-way player at 3B plus on the mound with a solid average body. Currently, he projects best at 3B for the next level. Foot speed is solid average and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get and playing through the ball with his feet and hands. Defensive abilities are solid average in the middle of the IF. Arm strength is solid average showing some carry on his throws. He needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate is where Chowning shows best displaying above average abilities and power. Hands are quick and direct, generating bat speed. He shows a plus feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He has a ton of potential at the plate. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 78-80 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays tilt downward with gradual break. Changeup shows average feel for with sinking action. He attacks hitters as he is around the plate with all his pitches. With 2 years to further develop, Kelby has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

05/31/2009 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Kelby is a solid athlete that shows well as a solid 3B with a lot of projection for the next level. He did show on the mound but only projects at 3B for the collegiate level. His body shows a strong lower half with projection as he polishes and firms up. Feet are quick as indicated by his 7.25 60 time. He utilizes his feet well in his defensive play. Hands and feet work well together through the fielding and throwing process. Glove action is presented down and out front, displaying soft, sure hands. Backhand is solid and he is not afraid to use it. He shows off his athletic abilities on slow rollers as he makes the play. His throws show carry and accuracy across the diamond through a stiff arm action. He will benefit by being more aggressive in coming to get and playing through routine ground balls. At the plate, he shows a square stance with balance. Hands are quick, generating bat speed and he utilizes all fields by keeping hands inside the ball. He has strength in his swing to the pull side. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 77-79 mph. Off speed pitches are near average and need further development to be quality pitches at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
