Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/2BPosition Projection

11/13/2011 - College PREP - Marlborough, MA Kevin worked out at both 2nd base and 3rd base at his last workout in Boston, MA. He has soft hands, good footwork, and he centers the ball well. Kevin keeps the ball in front of his body, he works the double play nicely, and his exchange is quick and clean. Kevin has a long / loose arm action, and he throws with accuracy and average strength to his target. Kevin showed slightly better at 3rd during the workout. He can improve defensively by quickening his feet, playing more through the ball, and with added arm strength. At the plate, Kevin has a square / athletic set-up, a short stride, and good balance. He swings in good rhythm, he uses all fields, and he gets his lower 1/2 through. Hitting can spike with work on his load, staying closed, and shortening his swing.

07/13/2011 - College PREP - Washington DC, MD Kevin worked out both at 2nd and 3rd base during his last workout in Washington, DC. He showed equal at both positions with soft / sure hands, fluid feet, and by fielding the ball in a low / athletic position. Kevin presents his glove well, he made plays, and he works the double play nicely. He has a solid backhand, he plays through the ball, and he throws with a loose arm with accuracy to his target. Quicker feet and added arm strength will help abilities at both positions improve. At the plate, Kevin has a good set-up, a square stride, and a proper load. He has good balance, average bat speed, and he makes square / consistent contact. Kevin swings in good rhythm, he can spray to all fields, and he makes good use of his lower 1/2. If Kevin can level off his swing, and be less robotic, we could see a spike in offensive numbers.

06/23/2011 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2 It has been over a year since we last Kevin and not surprisingly, he showed us improvements in multiple areas. He lowered his 60 time from 8.81 to 7.96 and increased his radar velocity from 66 to 71 MPH during his time in Omaha. Defensively, he has good pre-pitch action in the infield, works around the ball nicely, and takes proper angles. Kevin fields in a low position, has a clean exchange, and throws accurately to his target. At the plate, Kevin has good balance, a level swing plane, shows the ability to spray the baseball to all fields, and makes consistent contact. He made adjustments well all week. Kevin is a hard worker and is very coachable, and we expect him to continue to improve.

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Mawe continues to show steady play in his baseball abilities in the middle of IF. He makes the routine plays and shows an accurate, playable arm, more suited for 2B. Feeds and turns of the 2B play are a plus as he shows off his athletic abilities. At the plate, swing path is short as he displays the abilities to handle the bat well. Power numbers will increase as more overall body strength is gained. Kevin is very coachable and willing to make adjustments. He has time and room to continue to improve.

07/28/2009 - College PREP - Portland, ME Kevin is a young, 2012 graduate that shows as a two way player at 2B and behind the plate with a small, thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is well below average and he must get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive in his approach on ground balls. He presents two hands well, showing a soft, sure glove action. Defensive abilities are average in the IF. Behind the plate, receiving skills are solid average through a low set up and target. He displays flexion and works to get mitt around the baseball. Blocking skills are slightly above average as he uses his body to block balls. Pop times were 2.50-2.70 as his feet work in line with his target. Arm strength is average and he needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, lowering pop times. At the plate, hitting abilities are slightly above average with below average power through a balanced approach. Lower half works well and he has an idea at the plate. Swing path gets long due to an arm bar created in his load. Power numbers will increase as more overall body strength is developed. With 3 years to further develop, Kevin has abilities with potential to improve significantly.

07/14/2009 - Cape Cod Training 2009 - Week 2 Kevin showed as a 2B at the event, displaying average arm strength with slightly above average defensive abilities. He must get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Glove action is presented out front showing solid hands in making all the plays. At the plate, hitting abilities are slightly above average through a balanced approach. He makes consistent contact through a level swing path as he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
