07/09/2018 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Lawson improved his pop times as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.30. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Feet are quick in gaining ground through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. He shows a solid setup and sticks balls well in the zone and utilizes his body well through the blocking process but needs to work to get down sooner. At the plate, hands are quick and work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach. At the event, he was 4 for 10. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

07/14/2017 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Lawson continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.45. Feet are active working in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Glove action is soft as he sticks balls well in the zone through the receiving process. He uses his body well through the blocking process but needs to work to get body down sooner. At the plate, hitting abilities have improved through an athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. With 3 years to further develop, Lawson has a lot of potential with time and room to continue to progress his game.

01/13/2017 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Lawson is a young 2020 C prospect who shows impressive strength for his size and the ability to take coaching and make positive adjustments in game. He shows off a strong arm behind the plate, keeping potential base stealers stationary and posting good pop time numbers (2.68 seconds). He looks comfortable behind the dish with an easy stance that allows him to drop quickly to block. His hands are soft to receive and he tracks the ball well with his eyes to keep his body quiet on pitches inside his frame. Improving his footwork will help on both lateral blocking and popping up to throw, further improving his defensive skills. At the plate, his hands work well to load to a powerful stack and get ready to launch through the zone. He tracks the ball well with good pitch recognition skills and shows spray ability to use all fields for base hits. Lawson is an intriguing young prospect who has the work ethic necessary to reach his full potential.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
