Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

09/11/2016 - National Tryout - La Verne (Los Angeles), CA Marcelo is a young, two way player who continues to show potential on the field. At 1B, Marcelo uses his quick, active feet to field ground balls in the center of his body. He presents his glove well and has a clean exchange to throw from a high 3/4 angle. He gains momentum to his target well which leads to his throws being consistently accurate and on-line. Marcelo can improve defensively by lowering his chest more when fielding ground balls. At the plate, Marcelo shows good balance and takes a square stride to the ball. He is smooth getting into his load and comes through the zone with his lower half, finishing with a firm front side. He takes an on-plane route to the ball which allows him to drive the ball to his pull side. More power will come as Marcelo continues to grow into his body. On the mound, Marcelo shows a three pitch mix with his fastball sitting from 64-65mph. Slider ranges form 49-52mph with 10-4 movement. Changeup sits from 52-56mph with good cutting action. Marcelo can improve as a pitcher by loosening up his mechanics. Overall, Marcelo continues to improve and shows great potential which makes him a player to follow.

07/10/2016 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Marcelo is a strong, young two-way prospect who shows good potential to develop into a nice all-around player. He is a bulldog on the mound, coming right after hitters and pounding the zone with strikes with both his fastball and curveball. As a pitcher, Marcelo has sound mechanics with good balance and direction towards the plate, which allows him to command his pitches. Getting more lower half push to the plate and keeping his arm in sync with his body will bring an uptick in velocity and stuff for Marcelo and help him take a big step forward as a pitcher. At first, he has good footwork around the bag and to throw to the bases, taking an aggressive first step. He presents a good, big target to his infielders and gets good glove extension both when fielding and catching throws. At the plate, Marcelo shows natural hitting instincts and is quiet at the plate with a good setup. As he grows into his body, more power will come and he will be a solid hitter to watch. This is a solid young player to follow.

03/13/2016 - Interactive Video Program - Monterey Park (Los Angeles), CA Marcelo is a young (2021 grad) RHP who has a projectable/athletic frame. On the mound, this righty has a 3-pitch mix coming from a low 3/4 arm slot. He repeats his delivery well and works the zone. FB tops out at 60 mph as it shows some cut. Breaking ball has 9/3 shape - 53-54 mph. Changeup has good sinking action as he throws it with FB arm speed. Overall abilities on the mound will improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Arm strength (long toss)
2. Arm action
3. Finish / Follow through

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
