10/28/2009 - Arizona Fr/So Fall Classic - 2009 Tipton continues to show improvement in his baseball abilities, especially at the plate where he now has above average abilities and power. He loads well with upper and lower half working well together, transferring weight well through the swing. Hands are quick and direct to the baseball, generating bat speed as he keeps hands through the baseball at the point of contact through a level swing path. He shows a solid feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered as he shows future power potential. At the event, he was 7 for 14 with a 3B. Behind the plate, pop times will continue to drop as he develops more arm strength through a long toss program. He is a solid receiver and blocker with tools projecting well at the next level as he shows advanced skills for a young player as he also showed well at 1B and in the OF.

07/21/2009 - Cape Cod Training 2009 - Week 3 Mason is a young, 2014 young graduate. A two-way player that shows as a catcher and in the OF with a small, thin frame with projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is near above average as indicated by his 7.19 60 time. His feet work well in line to his target as he shows off his athletic abilities and displays a ton of energy. Receiving and blocking skills are solid average. Setup is quiet and solid, allowing his glove action to work around the baseball, presenting good view to umpire. He is a wall behind the plate as he centers all balls with body, keeping all balls in front. Arm strength is solid average and he will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, lowering pop times. Pop times are in the 2.26-2.43 range. At the plate, Tipton shows slightly above average abilities and power through a balanced approach. Hands are quick and direct to the baseball, flashing bat speed. He makes solid contact and shows a feel for the barrel. Swing path gets long with power numbers improving as more overall body strength is developed. With 4 years to further develop, Mason has potential to be a solid catcher behind the plate as he continues to further develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
