12/27/2024 - Baseball Factory East Coast Winter Classic (MS) Mateo continues to impress with his baseball abilities on the diamond. At 1B, feet are active and displays proper footwork around the bag and he is a quality receiver. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Lower half works well through the swing with an aggressive hip turn. On the mound, arm strength his improved as he threw his top velocity at 50 mph. Fastball showed a range of 47-50 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but through too hard, resembling fastball. Getting on a long toss program to develop more arm strength will aid in improving stock on the mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable, has great attitude, and works hard to be the best player he can be.

07/22/2024 - All-In National Showcase - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA Mateo is a solid 1B/RHP who will graduate in 2030. At 1B, defensive abilities are solid as he shows smooth/fluid actions. He displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean and presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 47-48 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sink but throws too hard, resembling fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 6 years to further develop, Mateo has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
