01/13/2012 - 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament This week in Arizona, Matt displayed the ability field the ball out in front and center everything hit to him, but needs to continue to work low and through the groundball. At the plate, he has a balanced setup and good bat speed that allows him to create consistent contact. His offensive tools should continue to improve as he learns to create a consistent load and stay inside and through contact. On the mound, he has an easy lose arm action, he gets downhill to the plate, and he works both sides of the dish. His abilities on the mound should continue to flourish as he learns to keep his front side closed. With one more season of high school baseball remaining, Matt has the opportunity to showcase his skills and continue to prepare for the next level.

10/12/2011 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2011 Matt continues to show well in both workout and game settings. He performed well against top competition at the Arizona Senior Fall Classic. On the mound he showed a low 80s fastball with a change and a power breaking ball that acts as his out-pitch. It has tight spin and depth and is a true swing-and-miss pitch. His delivery is balanced and repeatable and shows maturity and poise on the mound. His athleticism and competitiveness are tremendous assets on the mound. In the infield Matt shows fluid, advanced actions with soft, sure hands. He is a confident defender who consistently makes routine plays. At the plate he has a disciplined approach with quick hands and makes consistent solid contact. Overall, Matt has a great work ethic, a high baseball IQ and the tools to be a 2-way player at the next level, though his highest ceiling appears to be on the mound.

06/08/2011 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2011 Matt played both SS and RHP during his time at the UA Southeast Tourney. Defensively, Matt showed good aggressiveness, athletic actions, and he worked hard during drill work. He made all the routine plays in game situations, he showed solid footwork, and he throws with a quick, accurate arm to his target. On the mound, Matt is a hard worker with a good arm action and a repeatable delivery. He is around the plate with his FB, he has good command of his CH, and he holds runners on base well. Offensively, Matt is an aggressive hitter with a good approach and good barrel accuracy. He makes solid / consistent contact and he has some pop to the pull side.

01/14/2011 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2011 Terry showed similar abilities as we had previously seen at the Arizona Fall Classic. He is fundamentally sound defensively and shows off his athletic abilities on slow roller plays. Throws are accurate but will benefit by staying on a long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry. Offensively, Matt shows a balanced approach with his hands working directly to the baseball. Swing path gets long at times with power showing best to the pull side. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-80 mph. Currently, he projects best at 2B for the next level.

10/20/2010 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2010 Matt is a hard-nosed two-position guy who showed fairly well at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic. In the infield, he has an above average arm and makes the routine play. Good instincts with the glove, but can continue to grow in situational awareness. Shows surprising strength in the batter's box, but can utilize his lower half more effectively and he tends to collapse his back side. On the mound, he has a clean arm stroke and good balance throughout his delivery. He changes speeds and planes effectively and has good tempo. His delivery can loosen up a bit, but he throws the fastball downhill and has good tilt to the breaking ball. He goes after hitters and is effective in general. Solid young player.

10/03/2010 - College PREP - Boise, ID Matt has improved his baseball abilities as he projects as a top notch player in the MIF. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.29 runner. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in coming to get, playing through the baseball with his body. He looks the part with hands and feet working well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Throws display life carry and accuracy across the diamond. Offensively, Terry loads well and attacks the baseball with his hands. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields with power numbers improving as the baseball explodes off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-79 mph with average off speed pitches. Currently, he projects best in the MIF where he will get looks from the collegiate coaches.

08/11/2010 - Pirate City World Series 2010 - Session 2 Terry showed similar abilities that we have previously seen at events. He plays hard and is a gamer. Defensively, actions are smooth with hands and feet working well together through the fielding process. He moves well laterally and shows a quick transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the ball quickly. Offensively, Matt shows quick hands, generating bat speed through a short, compact path. On the mound, he works to get ahead of hitters with fastball showing a range of 75-79 mph with arm side run and sink. He has an idea on the mound as he changes speeds well, keeping hitters off balance. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable with a great attitude.

08/05/2010 - Vero Beach Pro Select Training and Competition - 2010 Defensive and hitting abilities really improved at the event. In the MIF, he displayed big play potential with hands and feet working well through the fielding process. Hands are fluid, soft, and clean in making all the plays. He shows off his athletic abilities on slow rollers displaying plus body control. Offensively, he showed plus bat speed with hands working well to and through the baseball at contact. He works to keep hands inside the ball and displays power to all fields displaying an advanced approach. At the event, he was 3 for 4. Matt is a solid baseball player that projects best in the MIF at the next level.

07/10/2010 - Cape Cod Training 2010 - Session 1 Terry showed as a two-way player on the mound and at 2B. Currently, he projects best at 2B where he displays solid tools. Defensively is fundamentally sound and made all the plays through easy actions. Offensively, Matt showed and aggressive approach with baseball jumping off his bat when centered, flashing gap to gap power. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 73-78 mph with slight run on a strong downhill plane. Breaking ball flashes potential of being a quality pitch displaying 11/5 shape with late bite. He has an upside on the mound, especially if more arm strength is gained.

04/18/2010 - College PREP - Stockton (Sacramento), CA Matt is a young 2B/SS with an average body that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Feet are active in coming to get the baseball but needs to be more aggressive in playing through with hands / feet. He has an idea in his defensive play as he makes plays, showing a low to high approach with actions being more suited for 2B at the next level. Throws show some carry through a long, stiff arm action. Offensively, Terry has quick hands, flashing bat speed through a level swing path as he attacks the baseball displaying a solid feel for the barrel. Power numbers will increase as he learns to stay back, transferring weight through his lower half. Swing path gets long due to arm bar created in his load. With 2 years to further develop, Matt has potential abilities with room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
