08/31/2008 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Matt continues to show steady improvement in his baseball abilities. Arm strength has improved slightly but needs to develop further through a strict long toss program. Foot speed is above average and he utilizes his quick feet well in the infield. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with his feet and hands. His arm will play in the middle of the infield due to his ability to play through the baseball with his feet and hands. At the plate, West displays some bat speed and showed the ability to keep his hands inside and through the baseball at the point of contact. He is now a class 5 player due to his improvements in some of his baseball tools and will get some looks from the college coaches.

05/25/2008 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Matt has a lean, athletic looking body that shows projection as it continues to physically mature. Foot speed is above average and he utilizes his quick, athletic feet showing some lateral range. He does need to play through routine ground balls with his feet. Arm strength is average and he will benefit from getting on a strict long toss program to further develop. He does a nice job with his transfer and exchange on his throws. At the plate, Matt shows slightly average ability and power. Set up is solid and does show a nice load but swing path gets uphill with no weight transfer into a firm front side. Hitting skills will improve with some fundamental work / instruction and should improve in a hurry. He does flash some bat speed. West has some athletic ability with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
