12/27/2010 - UA Recruiting Classic - 2010 Matt is a young, good sized, athletic 2nd baseman with good skills. Though he got hurt and was not able to participate in the majority of the tournament, he did show well during his workout on the first day. His hitting continues to be a strength, and this time around, he showed better at 2B than when we previously saw him back in September. Defensively, Matt has quick feet, he covers ground well, and he has a solid glove. He makes plays consistently, his exchange is solid, and he throws with decent accuracy to his target. Defensive grades can get better if Matt can widen his base, play in a lower position, loosen his arm action, and continue to work on strengthening his arm through long toss. At the plate, Matt has a good base, level swing path, and good barrel accuracy. He has good bat speed, he is able to create backspin on the ball, and he has life in the barrel. A little shorter stroke, and better use of his lower 1/2 should help improve offensive tool grades. In his limited time in game play, he was an aggressive runner who took solid leads and got good reads/jumps on the bases. He is a hardworking player who will benefit a college program.
