Official Scouting Report

11/12/2023 - National Showcase - Orange (Los Angeles), CA Matthew continues to show as prospect with improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.28 runner. In the OF, defensive abilities are outstanding as he displays smooth / fluid actions. He takes good first steps in reading balls off the bat. Feet are aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. He utilizes his foot quickness in covering a lot of ground. Throws are accurate with online carry to his target. At the plate he continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work to and through a short / direct / level swing path, creating extension. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. Lower half works well through the swing with an aggressive hip turn. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 76-77 mph. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with downward break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

10/04/2023 - Arizona Sophomore Fall Classic (2026) Matthew is a lean, athletic OF/LHP who has a promising future on the diamond. In the OF, defensive abilities are well above average as he displays smooth / fluid actions. He takes good first steps in reading balls off the bat. Feet are aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls, playing through with momentum to his target. He utilizes his foot quickness (7.28 60 time) in covering a lot of ground. Throws are accurate with online carry (86 mph velocity) to his target. At the plate he continues shine, through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (88 mph exit velocity) and work to and through a short / direct / level swing path, creating extension. He has strength in his swing and he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Lower half works well through the swing with an aggressive hip turn. On the mound, he works through sound, repeatable delivery and a quick tempo. Fastball showed a range of 77-85 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with downward break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs. Control is solid as the attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. With 3 years to further develop, Matthew has an upside and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
