08/10/2008 - College PREP - Gaffney, SC Matt is a 1B with an outstanding body suited for the position. He presents a solid target at 1B with good actions around the bag. He presents his glove well with glove action improving if he utilizes his feet more in coming to get the baseball, currently sits and waits. He does show solid foot work around the bag and recovers well on the double play. Arm strength is average and he needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. At the plate, Deegan has solid average ability with near above average raw power. He shows quick hands and plus bat speed. Swing path is uphill due to no transfer in the lower half and he sits on his backside. He shows a good feel for the barrel, especially the pull side. The baseball jumps off his bat when centered. Matt will catch the eyes of some college coaches with his baseball abilities.

06/19/2008 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - 2008 Deegan improved his 60-yard dash by over a half second since we last saw him in 2006, down from 8.18 to 7.47. At the plate, he showed signs of power when he stayed balanced with his lower half - tended to dive towards the plate with his stride, and collapsed his back side. His stroke was short to contact, and he got extension through the ball when he was square and under control - has ability to work with at the plate, and potential for power. Defensively, he worked around the ball well and played the ball out front. He can work to improve his agility and lateral quickness, will help him to be a bit more nimble around the bag.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
