08/04/2008 - College PREP - Cleveland, OH Matt shows as a two way player on the mound and at 2B. Foot speed has improved now showing as a solid average runner. He utilizes his foot speed and agility well in the middle of the infield in coming to get and playing through the baseball. Glove action is soft, sure and solid in making all the plays. He shows a plus backhand with the ability to get rid of the baseball quickly. Arm strength is solid average and he does need to get on a strict long toss program to continue to build. His throws are accurate through a quick release. At the plate, Free continues to show solid average ability. He has bat speed and does a nice job of keeping the barrel through the baseball at the point of contact. Swing path gets long with barrel getting out around the baseball. On the mound, breaking ball shows as an above average pitch displaying a 11/5 shape, tight spin and late break. Change up is average and does need to polish up. Command is solid average with all his pitches. Fast ball will show better if more arm strength is developed. Matt has potential with a lot of room to improve. He currently does project best at 2B for the next level.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
