Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

04/21/2013 - College PREP - Plymouth Meeting (Philadelphia), PA Horton continues to show as a LHP/OF at the event. On the mound, delivery is sound, repeatable and he hides the ball well. Fastball showed a range of 74-75 mph with slight arm side run. Breaking ball displayed 12/6 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Slider showed 2/8 shape with loose spin and early break. He is around the plate with all his pitches, throwing a lot of strikes. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is developed through a long toss program. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls but needs to work on getting behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. At the plate, Matt shows an open setup with balance. Hands works through a level swing path and he makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. He needs to work to get stride foot down sooner to work on time and keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields.

09/22/2012 - Pitching/Catching Accelerated Training Weekend (Commuter) (Ages 14-18) Matt is a thin LHP, with some obvious athleticism and a plus presence on the mound. His arm works very well as he has good arm speed and a sound delivery. His fastball has some late run to it, and he throws it consistently for strikes. He throws a sharp 1/7 CB with FB arm speed, and is able to consistently locate. His CH has some run to it as well, as he throw is for strikes with near FB arm speed. Matt showed great extension in his delivery, as his lower half works very efficiently. His arm is loose and works in proper sequence with his lower body. Matt will continue to improve as he gets bigger and stronger, and in turn more explosive. He has a nice future ahead of him as he continues to grow.

08/06/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Matt showed as a LHP and in the OF for the first time. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level where he has upside. His delivery is sound / repeatable, allowing his arm to work free to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 72-82 mph with slight run. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with sharp break and shows flashes of being a quality pitch when he stays on top. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. In the OF, his feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls but needs to work on getting behind balls more to play through and continue to improve defensive grades. At the plate, Horton shows a solid setup with balance. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep his hands inside the ball to utilize all fields.

09/24/2011 - Accelerated Pitching/Catching Weekend (Commuter) Matthew has good tight movement in his pitches and has sound arm mechanics. Matthew should continue to work on loading his weight on his backside in his balance and bringing the weight through explosively to a low finish. This will allow him to better use his whole body in creating velocity not just arm strength.

11/06/2010 - Accelerated Hitting Weekend (Commuter) Matthew does a good job staying together with his hips and shoulders. If he strides straight he allows his lower 1/2 to work really well in finish off the swing. Matt's swing is level and he makes solid contact with the baseball. If he can avoid diving toward the plate, it will allow for his lower 1/2 to finish, thus adding more pop to his swing.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
