05/21/2017 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX Matthew improved his power potential at the plate through an athletic, crouched setup. Hands are loose and he lets the ball travel, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently through the swing. In the MIF, he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. Feet are aggressive as he works to square balls up and presents a soft glove well out front. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program.

01/10/2016 - National Tryout Plus - San Antonio, TX Matthew continues to develop on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he now runs his 60 in 7.28. At 2B, he works around the GB and picks out the hops well. He has plus lateral range hustling the GB's his to his right and left. Continuing to quicken his transfer to throw will help to turn the DP more efficiently. Offensively, Matthew remains selective with good zone awareness. He lets the ball travel into the zone, squares it up and looks to drive the middle of the field. Striding more square (not closing himself off) will allow him to engage his full lower 1/2 resulting in increased power. Matthew (2018 grad) has tools with still time to develop.

01/11/2015 - National Tryout - San Antonio, TX Matthew showed only at 2B at the event and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. In the MIF, defensive grade has really improved, displaying clean / smooth actions. He moves well laterally, especially to glove side, attacks balls through an aggressive approach, displaying clean hands, and shows off his athletic abilities on the slow roller play. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he presents hands more out front and improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup and aggressive approach. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path as he makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields and works to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. Power numbers will continue to improve as he works to use his lower half more efficiently.

07/20/2014 - California Select Training & Competition (Ages 12-14) Matthew is a very coachable player who plays hard and brings a lot of energy to the field. As an infielder he makes routine plays, reads hops well and showed good body control. He can improve by increasing lateral quickness/agility, arm strength and playing through the ball more. At the plate Matthew displayed a quiet approach, good rhythm and stays inside the ball. Also he showed good balance, plate discipline and tracks well. He needs to get hands up higher, be more direct with barrel and increase physical strength.

05/18/2014 - Interactive Video Program - San Antonio, TX Matthew is a 2-way player as a 2B/OF. Defensively at 2B, he has good prep, tracks the ball into his mitt, and fields the ball cleanly. He shows plus range and can cover some ground. In the OF, Matthew takes good routes/angles as he works into position behind the fly-ball. He has a clean exchange to throw and delivers accurate throws into his target. With the bat, this RHH shows a simple approach with good balance. He delivers the barrel on a short/direct path and squares it up. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Infield
1. Backhand footwork
2. DP feeds
Outfield
1. Arm strength
2. First step quickness
Offense
1. More lower 1/2 drive
2. Swing path

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
