07/27/2021 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 (HS) Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Behind the plate, feet are active as he works in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.27 and will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. He shows a squared setup and presents a soft mitt out front and utilizes his body through the blocking process, centering balls well out front. At the plate, he shows an open setup. Hands are quick (83 mph exit velocity) and work through level swing path. He makes consistent hard contact and stays inside the ball through a line drive approach, flashing gap to gap pop. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

09/08/2019 - National Tryout Plus - Greenville, SC Matthew continues to shine on the diamond with improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, feet are active as he works in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.31 with accuracy on his throws. Time will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength and works to get rid of the baseball quicker. He shows a squared setup and receives the ball well. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process but needs to work to get body down sooner. At 3B, feet are active as he works to square balls up. He needs to attack balls more and play through more with his body. Glove action is clean / firm but will benefit by presenting more out front. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, hitting / power potential have improved through an open setup. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball and shows a feel for the barrel, driving the ball to all fields. Hitting abilities will improve as he works to get stride foot down sooner to work on time. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently.

08/12/2018 - College PREP - Kannapolis (Charlotte), NC Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. He did show as a catcher for the first time at the event. At SS, feet are active as he works to square balls up. Glove action is clean but will benefit by presenting more out front. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.49 range with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and works to get rid of the baseball quicker. He presents a low target and sticks balls well in the zone. He uses his body through the blocking process but needs to work on getting down sooner. Squaring up stance will aid in improving receiving / blocking skills. At the plate, he shows a tall setup. Hands are loose and he stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently.

11/09/2017 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City (Ages 14-18) Matthew continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate, hitting / power potential have improved through a tall setup. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. He battles at the plate and will put the ball in play. At 1B, defensive abilities have improved as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean but needs to present more out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through with his body. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

08/20/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Kannapolis (Charlotte), NC Matthew is a tall (2021 grad) who plays at the 1B position. Defensively at 1B, he hustles hard and tries to field GB's in a square position. He fields the ball, sets his feet and makes accurate, on-line throws to his target. With the stick, this RHH looks to power up pitches in the zone. He shows good plate discipline and takes aggressive hacks through the zone. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
