05/22/2016 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX Matthew continues to work hard and make great strides in his game. On the mound, this righty has smooth separation and repeats his delivery well. FB now tops out a 78 mph while showing slight run. Curveball has 10/4 shape with good action when he stays on top. Changeup has some sinking action and will get GB outs. At 3B - he has active footwork and moves well into a square fielding position. He makes the backhand play smoothly and has a quick exchange to throw. Offensively, Matthew has a balanced setup with a solid base. He squares the ball up and looks to drive the middle of the field. Swinging on a shorter/more direct path with more bat speed will increase power. Matthew is a solid 2-way player who should find success on the diamond.

10/26/2014 - College PREP - Corpus Christi, TX Matthew is a sophomore 2-way player as a 3B/RHP. At the hot corner, Matthew squares up the ball and takes good angles, working from right to left. Exchange is clean as he fires accurate throws across the diamond. Fluidity of his actions and continuing to work on his glove skills will allow his fielding abilities improve. As a RHP, Matthew has a Hi 3/4-arm slot with a clean arm action and good control. He showed a FB in the mid 70s, CB with 10/4 shape sitting in the low 70s and a CH with sink in the mid 70s. Tapping into his lower 1/2 and driving to the plate will help to increase velocity. Offensively, he squares himself to the plate with a soft, controlled load. He uses all fields by tracking the ball deep into the zone and will see more gap to gap power when he loosens up his actions at the plate and keeps his hands level. Matthew is a hardworking, 2017 grad - who will only continue to improve.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
