08/11/2008 - College PREP - San Diego, CA Mike is a big, strong athlete, that shows good mound presence. He should be given a good opportunity to develop on the mound and as a hitter. As a pitcher, Mike has a strong arm as indicated by his fastball ranging in the mid 80's, and has good complimentary pitches in his curveball and change up. His potential lies in his raw physical ability as he lacks polish in his mechanics. With some refining to his delivery, he could easily be sitting in the high 80's, giving his curveball and split a sharper action. At the plate, Mike shows much of the same strong, raw ability as he shows on the mound. He displays a solid load and very good bat speed. He has an uphill swing and opens with his shoulders a bit and yet he still has the ability and strength to hit the long ball. His contact ability will benefit from being more direct to the ball and by using the middle to right side of the field more. Overall, Mike has huge upside due to his tremendous frame, and he will be a guy that will bring much reward to the program that develops his skills and technique.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
