Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament At the Pre-Season All-America, Michael topped out at 83 MPH, his hardest recorded velocity. On the mound, he throws three pitches with his 11/5 curve-ball having sharp break. He threw a lot of first pitch strikes which made his off-speed pitches very effective, despite having the best control. He is very competitive, shows an ability to make adjustments in-game, and mixes his pitches well. In the outfield, he stays behind and works through fly-balls with carry on his throws. He gets good jumps and has fluid footwork. With the bat, he stays inside the ball and makes consistent contact to all fields. Using more of his lower half will help generate more bat speed and pop. Overall, Michael projects best on the mound at the next level.

07/13/2012 - 2012 Team One South Showcase Michael is a young OF/RHP with a solid frame that will graduate in 2013. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.20 60 time. Feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking balls in the OF. He needs to work on getting behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate with carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. He needs to work to raise arm slot to continue to improve arm grade. At the plate, Cooley shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows good barrel accuracy with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 76-78 mph with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is developed. Michael has a potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
