08/04/2010 - College PREP - Middletown, CT Mike is a big, athletic, 1B / Catcher that will graduate in 2011. In the INF, Mike has loose actions, good hands, and he fields the ball out in front of his body. He has good footwork, a nice exchange, and he throws accurately to his target. Added arm strength will only help defensive numbers get better. Behind the plate, Mike has quiet actions, a soft glove, and he looks the ball into his glove. He centers the ball well on his chest when blocking and has good direction toward his target when throwing. Mike throws with some carry to 2nd base, and with a wider base and again, added arm strength, Catching grades can get better. At the plate, Mike has a good set-up, good bat speed, and barrel accuracy. He has a level approach and he can spray the ball to all fields. If Mike can keep his hands high, loosen his grip, and stay short through the ball, offensive numbers can spike.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
