Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2008 - Christmas Camp and Tournament - 2008 Lopez raised his top end fastball velocity three mph, up from 78 to 81. His fastball had some sink, he kept it down well and did a good job of competing in the strike zone. His delivery was smooth, and he worked down the slope of the mound well. His arm worked with some looseness out front, and he showed good arm speed. He did not maintain his balance and direction on his breaking ball, resulting in loose spin and lazy rolling action - needs to maintain his delivery in order to reach a consistent release point. His stuff is solid, and he showed flashes of pitchability as well. At the plate, he showed quick hands and signs of a short stroke. In the outfield, he showed some arm strength. His future is on the mound, where he has improved since we last saw him.

08/11/2008 - College PREP - San Diego, CA Michael is a dual position player looking to develop in both areas of the game. On the mound, he displays decent movement on all three pitches. He is inconsistent with the location of his curveball, but it has good action to it. He finds a good balance point, then, rushes a bit with his lower body. With the refinement of his mechanics and a better feel for his release point, he should gain some attention. At plate, Michael adequately centers the ball, displaying line drive power. He does implement the element of his hips into his swing fairly consistently, and he works hard to stay on top of the ball. His power and contact grade will improve by creating more momentum in his load and by keeping his hands inside the ball longer. In the outfield, he charges the ball well as he displays athletic action in his approach. Overall, Michael will need to improve his game by continuing to work on his fundamentals and technique, while adding overall body and arm strength.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
