Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/RHPPosition Projection

06/27/2010 - Team One South 2010 Michael showed similar skills at Team One as he has done in previous workouts. He is a short, solid, Catcher / Pitcher who currently projects better behind the plate. Michael lowered his pop times down to the 2.0 - 2.15 range and does so with quick actions. He blocks and receives the ball well and has a good exchange. On the mound, Michael is a good competitor, works in good tempo, and he keeps his eyes to his target well. He has good off-speed pitches, which he mixes in well. Michael can improve on the mound with better command and not falling off the 1st base side of the rubber. At the plate, Michael has a simple set-up and balanced approach. He has quick hands, a level swing, and he can spray to all fields. If Michael can attack the ball more aggressively, and drive the away pitch better, offensive numbers can spike.

03/07/2010 - College PREP - Greenville, SC Skelly has improved his tools and stock as a baseball player for the next level. Arm strength has imrpoved as he topped out at 85 mph on the mound. Fastball showed a range of 82-85 mph on a downhill plane with changeup now showing above average but projects best behind the plate as a catcher. Pop times were in the 2.07-2.15 range with a means of 2.09. He can catch and throw with plus receiving and blocking skills that will play at the next level. Offensively, he has improved abilities and power through a balanced approach. He works inside the ball, utilizing all fields as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered.

08/16/2009 - College PREP - Gaffney, SC Michael continues to show steady improvements in his baseball abilities. He shows as a two-way player as a catcher on the mound. He threw his best pop time to date at 2.02 and displayed more consistency on all his throws. Power numbers at the plate have increased to solid average as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 81-82 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball is best off speed pitch displaying a 10/4 shape with tight spin and gradual break. Changeup is average showing arm side run. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches.

06/13/2009 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 1 Michael is a young catcher with a small, solid frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and firm up body. Foot speed is average and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet work in line and well through the throwing process as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. His throws display carry with plus accuracy. Arm strength is above average and he needs to get on a strict long toss program to further aid in developing more arm strength, lower pop times. Pop times are solid average as indicated by his low pop time of 2.12. Blocking and receiving skills are near above average and will play at the next level. At the plate, hitting abilities are solid average with slightly above average power through an aggressive approach. He shows a feel for the barrel and works to keep hands inside the baseball, utilizing all fields. He was 3 for 10 at the event with 3 1B. With 2 years to further develop, Michael has potential and will be a solid player as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
