12/19/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #1 Mike showed many improvements in his drill work and game play during his time in Pirate City Mike has good athleticism in the middle INF, along with good instincts and play skills. He has good hands and feet and improved his arm and fielding numbers since we last saw him. Mike fields the ball cleanly and get rid of it very quickly to the bag. Defensive can further improve if he can pick out the better hops sooner, thus avoiding fielding the baseball on his heels. Offensively, Mike has excellent balance and bat speed. He makes solid contact and moves the runners well. Mike's offensive numbers could further improve with sometimes a less aggressive hack.

11/08/2009 - College PREP - Austin, TX Mike is a 2B with a small, athletic looking body that is well suited for his position. Foot speed is average and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active in coming to get the ball and playing through the baseball, as he shows life in his body during the play. Hands are soft and fluid but need to be presented more out front of his body. Defensive abilities and arm strength are solid average in the middle of the IF. At the plate, Cardenas currently has average abilities with slightly above average power through a balanced approach. He has strength in his swing but has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate. We expect his grades to improve with instruction and adjustments at the plate. Mike is an athletic player with some positive abilities, and he still has room to improve as well.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
