06/22/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Mike continues to show a ton of improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.50 runner. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in working in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times where in the 2.00 range with a low of 1.98. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, hitting / power grades have improved, now showing as outstanding tools. He shows an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, generating outstanding bat speed through a level swing path. Barrel accuracy is a plus as he displays strength in his swing with baseball exploding off his bat when centered. He can hit and hit with power. At the event, he was 4 for 8 with 3 2B. Mental makeup is a plus has he plays hard, shows leadership qualities and is very coachable.

03/24/2013 - College PREP - Union City, CA Mike is a thick, athletic catcher that will graduate in 2013. Feet are active / aggressive working in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times showed a range of 2.25-2.36 accuracy to his throws as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Times will continue to drop as more arm strength is developed through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills shows as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, Phelan continues to shine through an athletic setup and smooth approach. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered to all fields. Mike has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
