06/22/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Nathan is a gamer who plays the game hard. He showed well in Omaha (2-way guy - SS/RHP). Defensively at SS, he shows a fluid approach to the ball and works through it well. He shows good body control and plus range to balls hit into the hole. At the plate, Hines tracks the ball into the zone and has the ability to use the whole field. On the bump, FB now tops out at 79 mph and has slight run. He fills up the zone, throwing strikes with all of his pitches. He works smoothly and in-line toward the plate through a repeatable delivery. Hines is a very coachable, team player who gives it his all on the diamond.

02/03/2013 - College PREP - Orlando, FL Nathan worked out at both SS and on the mound during his last workout in Orlando. Defensively, Nathan showed sure hands, he is light on his feet, and he fields in a square position. He has good range, his release is quick, and he throws with accuracy to his target. Fielding can improve with more glove extension and not flipping the ball out of his glove. On the mound, Nathan has a loose arm action, a controlled balance point, and level shoulders. He will need to loosen his back arm action and not fall off to help mound effectiveness improve. At the plate, Nathan has a square set-up, good balance, and a square stride. He tracks the ball well and hits hard to the pull side. Better timing and not reaching will help spike hitting numbers.

11/10/2011 - Pirate City Select Training - 2011 Nathan is a young, thin, 2-way player who plays SS and RHP. Defensively, Nathan has playable hands and feet, and he makes plays on balls hit his way. He keeps the ball in front, plays through the slow roller, and he delivers the ball with accuracy to his target. If Nathan can field the ball further out in front of his body, play more through, and add arm strength, average numbers can rise. On the mound, Nathan has a sound arm action, good athleticism, and a FB touching 72 MPH. He throws strikes with his pitches and he gets outs. Mound effectiveness can improve if Nathan can improve his extension, bend his back, and keep his front side closed. Offensively, Nathan has a good setup, a loose grip, and he has proper separation. He has good bat speed, he puts the ball in play, and he gets good extension through the ball. A more still head and more lower 1/2 should help improve hitting numbers.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
