Official Scouting Report

01/18/2013 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City During his time at Pirate City, Nathan showed on the mound as well as at 3B. On the hill, FB now tops out at 71 mph and shows some run. He works in-line toward the plate, reaches a tall balance point, and attacks the zone. More lower 1/2 drive and increased arm strength will help arm velocity the continue to climb. Defensively at 3B, he works to get into a square fielding position and makes the plays. To help defensive abilities improve, he needs to play lower and through the ball toward his target. As a hitter, Nathan gets into a good loaded position. He swings on a level path, making square contact as he went 2 for 6 at the event with 2 singles and a walk. Soltau is a coachable player and will continue to improve with hard work.

10/28/2012 - College PREP - Stillwater (Minneapolis), MN Nathan is an average sized, RHP who will graduate in 2013. On the mound, Nathan has decent mechanics, good direction toward home, and he finishes in a complete position. He mixes his pitches and is around the plate. More front side lead, proper separation, and added arm strength can improve mound effectiveness. Offensively, Nathan has a tall set-up, a short stride, and average bat speed. He has a middle approach, quiet actions, and he uses some lower 1/2. A better load, more bat speed, and improved timing can help spike hitting grades.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
