05/01/2011 - College PREP - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA Dutton continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Offensively, hitting grades and power numbers have really improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through the baseball at contact. Hands work to stay inside the ball as he utilizes all fields. He has strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. Defensively, feet are active but needs to be more aggressive in playing through balls with his body. Throws are accurate as he gets rid of the ball well through a quick, clean exchange. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 75-77 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with sharp, late bite. Slider shows tight spin with short break. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches.

08/11/2010 - Pirate City World Series 2010 - Session 2 Neil is a young (2013) SS, outfielder, and pitcher with a loose, athletic frame that is well suited for his positions. Currently, we like him more as a SS for the next level, but his versatility is a plus. Defensively as a shortstop, Neil's feet are active and aggressive in coming to get and playing through the baseball with his body. Glove action is soft, clean and sure in making the plays. Improving foot speed will be important in the future for him to stay in the middle of the infield. Throws show accuracy and flash carry. As an outfielder, he takes good angles and has accurate throws, but needs to work on finishing his throws and releasing the ball quicker. Offensively, Dutton shows a balanced approach as he gets into a strong launch position. He works to keep his hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a level swing path. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 70-76 mph with arm side run. Off speed pitches are near average, needing further development to be quality pitches at the next level. Dutton performed great in the tournament, going 7 for 11 at the plate. With 3 years to further develop, Neil has physical abilities with potential to be a solid collegiate player as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
