08/24/2014 - College PREP - Farmingville (Long Island), NY Nicholas is a young, lean SS/RHP that will graduate in 2016. Currently, he projects best at SS for the next level. Defensive abilities are solid as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active / aggressive as he attacks ground balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he presents well out front as he shows big play potential in the MIF. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he increases his foot quickness. Throws are accurate as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he continues to shine, displaying well above average hitting abilities through an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, generating bat speed to and through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows a feel for the barrel. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half and load more. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 73-75 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with sinking action. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Nicholas has potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
