02/09/2008 - Accelerated Hitting Mini Camp (Commuter) Nick has improved his ability to stay inside the baseball and use the entire field. He has improved his overall approach at the plate.

01/25/2008 - Pre-Season Invitational Tournament - 2008 Gentry has a solid build on an athletic frame at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds. He ran 7.09 in the 60-yard dash, only slightly down from the 7.05 we saw before. He has plenty of natural ability to work with, and showed aptitude in his ability to make adjustments. His primary area for improvement is his stride at the plate - he tended to dive into the plate, which gave him a lot of trouble getting the barrel both to contact and through the hitting zone. As a result, he handled pitches away well and went the other way well. He setup square and in an athletic position, and showed plenty of bat speed. His arm was strong from the outfield, and his throws spun well on line. Overall, a talented player with room to improve his skills.

08/08/2007 - College PREP - Baltimore, MD Nick shows well above average tools in all areas. His raw power is his best tool at the plate. He is strong and displays outstanding bat speed through a level swing path. He does get the barrel out around the baseball creating a pull type swing. As he allows the ball to travel and keeps hands inside the baseball, he will be able to utilize the entire field. His foot speed is well above average in the outfield. He utilizes his athletic feet in taking proper angles to track balls down. He is aggressive in his play and makes plays in the outfield. Nick does show some arm strength, but get on the side of the baseball from a low arm slot causing his ball to die as it get to target. As he learns to stay on top, his throws will provide life and carry. He is a young, 2009 graduate that will only get better over the next two years.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
