Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/RHPPosition Projection

07/17/2010 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Nick has an ideal catcher frame standing at 6/180lbs. Defensively he has soft hands and an accurate arm. He uses his quick feet and transfer to help with his pop times ranging from 1.94-2.10. At the plate, he has good balance and repeatable swing path and ok rhythm. He generates good bat speed and uses that to spray the ball to all fields.

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Nick participated in the UA Preseason All-America as both a C and RHP, and continues to show progression at both positions. He is a lean, athletic player who currently projects best behind the plate. Nick centers the ball well on his body, and he blocks / receives very well. His hands are soft and his arm is accurate with life and carry. A quicker exchange and added weight and strength should help Nick continue to improve defensively. On the mound, Nick is in-line and on-time. He has a loose / easy arm action, a clean arm path, and he gets good extension on his pitches. Nick's effectiveness on the mound can rise, if he can improve his off-speed pitches and add arm strength. Offensively, Nick has good balance and bat speed. He has a good approach, puts the ball in play, and has pull side pop. A shorter, more compact swing could help Nick's hitting and power numbers continue to improve.

11/08/2009 - College PREP - Austin, TX Velasquez is a talented young, two-way player as a catcher plus on the mound with a lean, athletic looking body that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Currently, he projects best as a well rounded defensive catcher for the next level. He received with strong, soft hands and blocked well, displaying a take charge and confident attitude behind the plate. His arm was accurate, and improved slightly from the last time we saw him. Can work to improve his body sway to receive, will help him present pitches better within the strike zone. At the plate, Velasquez has near above average abilities and power through an aggressive approach. He made hard contact displaying a solid feel for the barrel as he displays strength in his swing showing gap power. He needs to work to stay on pitches away longer, tended to spin off a bit - work to let the ball travel deeper into the hitting zone. On the mound, he topped at 82 with his fastball. He got good extension out front and was fundamentally sound with his delivery. He can work to lengthen his arm stroke out of the glove, a common problem for those that catch and pitch. Overall, Nick is a talented and versatile young player that will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

09/09/2009 - Under Armour Fall Classic - 2009 Velasquez showed as a talented and well rounded defensive catcher. He received with strong, soft hands. He blocked well, and had a take charge and confident attitude behind the plate. His arm was accurate, and improved slightly from the last time we saw him. Can work to improve his body sway to receive, will help him present pitches better within the strike zone. At the plate, he made hard contact and had some key hits. With improved strength, he will develop gap power. Needs to work to stay on pitches away longer, tended to spin off a bit - work to let the ball travel deeper into the hitting zone. On the mound, he topped at 82 with his fastball. He got good extension out front and was fundamentally sound with his delivery. Can work to lengthen his arm stroke out of the glove, a common problem for those that catch and pitch. Overall, talented and versatile young player.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
